Start: :Shawford Down Car park, SO21 2DG on east side of unclassified road between Compton and Shawford , south of Winchester, just north of bridge over motorway signed Compton Down. [GR: Explorer OL32: SU 466248].
Shawford Down bus stops for Service 1 between Winchester and Southampton (both directions) are 200m north of the car park entrance and are on the route. Shawford Railway Station is on the route near the end, shortly before Q3.
Exit car park to road. Turn right on pavement. 100m at Notice Board on right.
Q1. Where were the troops who passed this way walking to?
Continue down road past Shawford Down bus stops. Turn right on road signed Shawford Railway Station. Turn first left on Pearson Lane, downhill with white line marking centre of carriageway at start, past Brackenlea Care Home. At sharp right bend turn left on Permitted Bridleway. At bottom of hill turn right on footpath under railway and follow path round right and left bends ignoring side paths, passing Compton Place on your left. At cross-paths after the remains of Compton Lock (widened boat basin on left) keep straight on through kissing gate to left of memorial bench and over footbridge. Bear ½ left on path with wooden railway-sleeper walkway, over bridge and ahead through Hockley Meadows, across river and up to road.
Cross road (great care – busy and quite fast) and turn right on left-hand pavement. After 200m turn sharp left on Restricted Byway uphill. Straight on over farm track. Ignore stile to left onto golf course. After a further 1km, at cross-paths, turn right uphill on Kingfisher Trail. At end follow Bridleway signs on Official diversion right and left to War Memorial on right.

Continue downhill on track to road. Cross road to right of bridleway sign then bear left to gate. Pass through gate on enclosed wide path, through another gate and straight on along right side of two fields. At T-junction turn right on track with horse paddocks on right. Ignore stile to left. Continue under height barrier along track to road. Turn left along road with care for 200m and immediately after Humphrey Farms turning to right, bear right through gap on footpath diagonally across field. Continue through gap in hedge and immediately turn left along left side of scrubby corner of field. Continue ahead on path keeping to left of house gardens. At end of path continue ahead bearing right onto road and round left bend past Twyford School.
At T-junction turn right, 10m turn left down Church Lane. [This is the same busy road you crossed earlier. Safest option is pedestrian crossing to left of T-junction.] Straight on past church and crossr river by footbridge alongside vehicle deck. Ahead through kissing gate and take left path turning to left across stream. At end of footbridge take either path to right diagonally across field, through kissing gate and turn right on road. Straight on past pub and under railway bridge by Station. Cross the station car park entrance and up steps to right of Shawford station sign. Straight ahead across driveway, up and through gate onto Shawford Down Nature Reserve. Turn right following clear path uphill close to trees and hedge/fence on right. At triangular paths junction just before a kissing gate on right bear slightly left to kissing gate in top hedge with road beyond it. Do not go through gate. Turn left uphill on path closest to hedge on right. Take first narrow path to right and turn right through kissing gate to Memorial Cross.
Q3. At the base of the upright of the cross, how many bolts hold it in place?
Exit Memorial site through kissing gate and turn right through small gate on right of large gate, straight on along vehicle track. At cross-tracks turn right through kissing gate back to car park.
