Route Directions

Leave Shanklin Railway Station entrance and turn right down steps to road, turn right and almost immediately cross road in front of Lidl’s store.  Turn right and follow Bridleway SS18 to Ninham, passing through holiday caravans and straight ahead on Bridleway SS17 signed to Scotchells.  Bear right to end of caravans.

Q1.  At blue sign on right, how many people are depicted on the sign?

Leave Caravan Park on the track on the left and continue ahead on bridleway.  At cross tracks go ahead on Byway SS18 White Cross Lane.  Continue on byway through metal gate, ignoring footpath to right signposted Languard.  Past large blue warehouse on right and through five bar gate to road.  Cross main road, turn left and continue up road.  At the airport turn right on bridleway SS57 Scotchells Brook Lane.  Cross end of runway and when road turns right keep ahead on Footpath NC23 Borthwood, with caravans on left.  As path becomes enclosed and immediately before white house turn left on Footpath NC19 to Apse Heath.

Q2.  What is the name of the white house?

Continue ahead with hedge on right.  At entrance to wood by wooden footbridge turn left across field under power lines towards footpath junction, ignoring Footpath to left and right.  Ahead following edge of field with hedge on left around to right, ignoring track ahead, continuing with hedge then fence on left through wooden gate by house.  Bear left across entrance to house and lorry yard and immediately right following yellow arrows on narrow enclosed path to road.

Cross road onto Footpath NC37 America Wood.  Downhill on path through woods, cross main track and ahead on NC37 America Wood along edge of field with hedge on left and solar panel farm on right.  As field sweeps around to right continue straight ahead, down steps and cross two streams with wooden bridges, bear left over stile into Woodland Trust land.  20m ahead to metal gate on left, do not go through but bear right uphill through woods crossing wooden bridge.  Immediately after bridge bear left on path then at building bear right.  40m at wooden waymark sign turn left following blue arrow on main path ignoring all side paths, crossing 2 wooden bridges to eventually reach steps leading to main road.

Q3. What is the name of first house on right hand side?

Cross main road and ahead on concrete drive opposite, signpost NC39 Shanklin and Wroxall, after 50m at 6 bar metal gate and at cross tracks, ahead to gate ignoring concrete track to left and right, ahead with hedge on left and barbed wire fence on right.  Cross stile, up steps and over stiles to cliff face, climbing the 122!! Steps. Through kissing gate and immediately turn left with hedge on left along left hand side of field continuing on Footpath SS10 Shanklin, passing Anne’s Wood sign.  Through kissing gate with beautiful views over The Solent and Channel past Shanklin Estate Holm Copse information board.  Down steps, through kissing gate and continue on path through middle of field, through kissing gate and diagonally cross field heading for fence to go through kissing gate and over stone steps into churchyard. Through churchyard and lychgate to adjacent post box.

Q4. What is the post box number?

Turn left along main road with recreation ground on left. After Crab and Lobster PH, turn right into Chine Avenue. After 100m bear right into Tower Gardens, straight ahead and at end of Gardens turn left down steps to pavement immediately turn right through barrier downhill on tarmac drive passing Chine Inn. At bottom bear left on road towards seafront, at roundabout ahead on promenade with beach on right and continue to clock tower.

At end of promenade turn left up Hope Road to traffic lights. Cross road and ahead up Atherley Road. At junction and at end, turn right back to Railway Station.
