Route Directions

From inside of main entrance of station follow sign to Temple Quay. Follow station exit and Temple Quay signs through a car park down the slope through another car park, cross road into paved walkway to reach river and bridge in front. Turn left on quayside, river on right, to pass under double road bridge to reach next road bridge, turn left up slope to road, turn right over bridge. 100m turn left uphill on Tower Hill, at top turn left along tree lined road (Castle Street) turning right into park between bollards. Ahead on footpath passing bandstand and church shell on right to reach road and cross at second pedestrian crossing up from bridge heading for Baldwin Street to the left of St Nicholas church. Straight on for 20m then turn right up steps to St Nicholas Market. Ahead over road into All Saints Lane to end and turn left. At main market entrance on left stop at notice board with reference to the Corn Exchange Clock.

Q1 What “ Bristol time” does the noon train to London from Temple Meads leave?

Straight on into Clare Street. At the end of the road turn left across road at pedestrian crossing then immediately right on another pedestrian crossing to pedestrian plaza.  Turn left, passing water fountains and ahead on the left of quay to turn right over Pero’s (ear trumpet) footbridge and ahead passing right of “we the curious”. Turn right to cross main road, right again, left up steps and emerge into College Green, turn left to reach Bristol Cathedral notice board to left of entrance.

Q2 For how long has the Cathedral been a place of prayer?

Turn right passing water feature on left in front of the City council building (golden unicorns on roof) to road, turn left up Park Street to third road on left (Charlotte Street). Turn left and ahead to bend; turn right up steps then left to path into Brandon Hill Park. Take the first right fork the keep right uphill, ignoring right and left turns to level path at benches/Peace Plaque/pond. Turning left down steps on left to bottom, turn left. Straight on path to crossing by benches and litter bin and turn sharp right downhill between park info sign and bench passing distant turquoise panelled apartments on left to steps and road. Cross and go up Constitution Hill (1 in 6!), straight on up to top (Lower Clifton Hill sign opposite). Cross road and go up diagonal path opposite to “T” turn left for 10m then right through gate, War Memorial on right and ahead on tree arched St Andrews Walk to end at The Fosseway. Cross road, pass bus shelter and cross road onto diagonal walled path (Victoria Square) to go through arch into Boyce’s Avenue (shops!) and ahead to T junction and road.  Cross zebra crossing, turn left then immediately right into Princess Victoria Street.  Ahead to turn right into The Mall to the end. Cross zebra crossing to right and half left across parkland. Cross road and head in same direction sign posted “Observatory” slightly uphill. At the Observatory on right see the notice board.


Q3 When was the Camera Obscura installed?

Retrace steps along path overlooking the gorge with the Observatory on left, turn right down winding path passing rock slide to road. Cross and turn right to walk across Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge

Straight on road to bear left into Burwalls Road and follow to reach the National Trust sign for Leigh Woods, enter metal fenced enclosure, go through gap and follow distinct path through woods keeping roughly parallel to road on right to reach concrete block. Turn left, over bridge and turn right on path to go under graffitied road bridge to small staggered wooden gates, cross tramway, turn left to cross refurbished girder bridge. At end ahead following road around to right. Cross at pedestrian crossing then right down steps and right along Avon Crescent. Enter Underfall Yard. Pass HARBOUR MASTER on left to reach quay side, turn right. Follow harbour side path around to the right then left at slipway to join road with old rail track, continue following rails to turn left through black bollards and left of Bristol Classic Boat Co on path to road with Aardman studios in front. Turn left to reach Brunel’s information board on left.


Q4 What is depicted at No 7?

Carry on to quayside, turn right and follow quayside to pass M Shed and cranes. Cross Wapping Road onto brick paved walkway and straight on to end. Turn right then left over blue/green bridge. Ahead for 10m then turn left to pass The Ostrich on right following “cobbles” round to right and pass wooden building on left, cross rough ground to gap and road, turn right. Keep on pavement passing the Quaker Burial Ground on right to cross road to left at zebra crossing to St Mary Redcliffe church. Ahead on left of church along Redcliffe Way on the right hand side to reach the Holiday Inn Express. Cross road, turn right then left up Station Approach to end.

One can use the Brislington or Long Ashton Park and Ride [does not operate Sundays/Bank Holidays] if not using the train to the start and finish.
