The Club was formed in 1986 to promote non-competitive walking as a healthy leisure activity for all ages with all walks organised so that they may be completed at your own pace. We are affiliated members of three main walking organisations:-
The British Walking Federation which in turn is affiliated to the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV). This is a union of world-wide clubs which organise non-competitive walks and aim to encourage participation in a spirit of sportsmanship and friendliness by an Awards scheme.
The Long Distance Walkers Association whose aim is to further the interests of those who enjoy long distance walking and whose main interest is in events of 20 miles or more.
The Ramblers’ Association who facilitate for the benefit of all the enjoyment and discovery on foot of Britain’s countryside and promote respect for the life of the countryside. The Association vigorously protects rights of way and campaigns for freedom to roam over uncultivated open country.
Our walks are Club events and Permanent Trails. Major events are listed in capitals on the programme under the ‘Walks’ tab. Series events are divided into a Wessex Series of 12 walks through the year on Sundays with a choice of 10km or 20km routes, and 7 Summer Series walks of 10km on Saturday evenings. Additional ‘social’ walks called Jaunts are held [usually] on Thursdays, using Permanent Trails (our own and other Clubs’).
Our 34 Permanent Trails of various distances (listed on the back page) spread around the country can be walked at any time. Social events are arranged throughout the year and a Skittles Team competes in the Club name. The Club does not have a membership fee. We make a small entrance fee for each walk to encourage walkers to come to events without commitment. We keep in touch through Newsletters distributed by e-mail.
For Further information about the club please contact our Secretary.
Various social events are organised throughout the year and we keep in touch through a Newsletter distributed via email. Please contact the Secretary if you wish to be added to the mailing list.
We do not have a membership fee but encourage people, of all ages, to come along to our events. We make a small charge at each walk, currently £1, which covers cost of hiring halls, insurance and all the usual administration costs. Further information can be found in main Walk page.
